The death of India’s most famous modern artist, M.F. Husain, in a London hospital early Thursday has prompted an outpouring of grief from across the country. Labeled as the "Picasso of India" by Forbes magazine, the 95-year-old maverick earned fame and wrath for his works.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described Mr. Husain’s death as a "national loss."
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil: “He was a world renowned artist whose extraordinary style made him a celebrity in his own right in the arena of contemporary paintings.
